I have been fairly quiet recently, completing my novel The Dirty Beast, but much of my time has been working with my good friend and collaborator, S.E. Miller.
Around ten years ago over a few beers we started chatting and ended up formulating the comedy series plan, BUMPIN' UGLIES. Within a month we'd drafted up the pilot script as well as the outline of an additional seven episodes. We loved it.
The BBC took the pilot script and evaluated. Unfortunately they got back to us stating they did not want to commission it at the current time. It's a tough business getting anything from paper to screen.
Not being deterred, we continued developing the remaining episodes, and in the last few months have been working on adding a little polish. Now we have decided to bring the series of scripts to the masses and introduce BUMPIN' UGLIES to the world.
OK, but what the hell is BUMPIN' UGLIES?
Think The Golden Girls meets Entourage. The series chronicles the characters of an over 65s singles community in Central Florida. They have realized they are in the final phase of their existence and are determined to live their remaining time to the fullest. Their activities more or less resemble their behavior as it was back in their late teens and early twenties, with the addition of some of the medical dilemmas that old age throws their way (prostate problems, erectile dysfunction, as well as a variety of other ailments). Their families are completely unaware of their crazy shenanigans, figuring they exist in stereotypical old people fashion.
The series is a work of fiction loosely based on the Central Florida complex named The Villages, the largest gated retirement community in the United States. Over the years it gained the reputation of being quite the party place, stories emerging of sex, sensuality, and general shenanigans. Around 2006 a Villages gynecologist rather controversially stated in an interview that she’d treated more cases of herpes and human papillomavirus at The Villages than she had during the time she’d practiced in Miami.
Check out my "Books" page for individual episode details. The first three episodes will be released by the end of March 2020, with the remaining 5 spread out equally between then and year end.
Cheers :)
Brandon
